Wondering who's leading the number one ranked university in the Philippines on science education in the UP system?
I can still remember the first time I have read Dr. Caesar Saloma's name. It was in my Physics textbook when I was in 4th year high school when we were studying about Filipino scientists. Little did I know that he is the chancellor of the university that I will be studying at. The 9th chancellor of the University of the Philippines Diliman, Dr. Caesar A. Saloma, was born on the 28th day of March 1960 in Tagbilaran, Bohol. He spent his childhood in Baclayan, Bohol and attended high school at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran City. Dr. Saloma took his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Physics at the Univeristy of the Philippines Diliman in 1981, 1984, and 1989 respectively. He has achieved and contributed a lot in his field of optics and he received numerous awards because of these. In 2004, he received a Galileo Galilei Award from the International Commission for Optics which made him the first scientist to receive the Galileo Galilei award from the ASEAN member countries. Also, in 2008, he received the triennial ASEAN Outstanding Scientist and Technologist Award from the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology during the 8th ASEAN Science and Technology Week in Manila. Publishing more than 100 papers in leading photonics, applied physics and multidisciplinary journals in the US and Europe, and leading the development of a method to generate high-contrast images of semiconductor sites via one photon optical beam-induced current imaging and confocal reflectance microscopy, Dr. Saloma raised the bar in the science studies in the Philippines in the optics field. His fields of interest include confocal laser scanning microscopy, interferometry, signal and image processing, neural networks, and complex adaptive systems. Saloma is also interested in the development of efficient models for describing the dynamics of real-world systems that involve a large number of interacting agents. He receieved the Lingkod Bayan Award on Spetember 19,2008, was elected as an Inaugural Fellow of the Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas on 2008, received the 2010 Outstanding Science Administrator Award from the DOST and NAST, was elevated to senior member status by the Board of Directors of the Optical Society of America in 2010, was elected as chancellor of the University of the Philippines Diliman on 2011, and was named as on of the 15 Asian Scientists to Watch on the same year. Throughout his career, he was able to develop new optical microscopy techniques.
