Individual Project - Seaboard Future Piano

The modern day piano that we use today was built at around 1700s  and is constantly improved until today. If you look back 300 years ago you will recognize this machine with its modern counter part, the only difference is the materials it was built with. Some see the piano as a perfect instrument in itself leaving only a few space for improvement. But now with the help of modern day technology, this musical instrument was re-imagined to push the boundaries of what it can do and thus the birth of the SEABOARD: The future keyboard.

The Seaboard Keyboard was developed in London and was a design conceptualized by multi-instrumentalist inventor Roland Lamb. He said that he got the idea when he was jealous of how the stringed instruments like the guitar can bend its pitch at will. The piano has its own limitations, unlike other instruments, it cannot bend its pitch, it can cannot sustain a note because it will decay once it is pressed and, it cannot change the dynamics of a note that is pressed. With this Roland Lamb found an idea for a design. This kind of music technology isn't actually new. There are a lot of keyboard with pitch bending tools and change of sound qualities and instruments functions. However this alterations can only be done at the post production of the music or when being accompanied by others or with the aid of a program in real time. But what really sets the Seaboard apart from those instruments is its unique touch design, with its rubber finish you can slide a note to the other along with its pitch in real time making it feel like the tip of you fingers an extension of the keyboard giving you more space to express. Along with its glissando feature in the top and bottom of the keys this makes the Seaboard a richly expressive instrument designed for real time performances.

"The Seaboard is really interesting, because you're forever trying to figure out how to make music more expressive. I've always been involved in music and technology and this is quite a relationship we're developing here ... we're trying to figure out how to get beyond the boundaries of technology that was invented 600 years ago or so." (Hans Zimmer, 2013; Academy winning film scorer of lion king, The Dark Kinght, etc.)

This is a composition i made that i wish to play if ever i will have a seaboard in the future.
